First Holy Communion
About the Sacrament
Holy Communion, also known as the Eucharist, is the last Sacrament of Initiation and completes your child's initiation into the Church. The Eucharist is often called the "source and summit" of the life of a Catholic and is the most powerful way to encounter the real presence of Jesus Christ.
During the Mass, by the power of the Holy Spirit, bread and wine are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ. We who celebrate are also transformed, becoming Christ's presence to others and recognizing the presence of Christ in others.
When Can My Child Receive First Holy Communion?
The Sacrament of Holy Communion is offered to children in Year Four (when they turn nine years old). Children in Grade 4 or above are eligible to celebrate the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.
Children participate in a preparation programme, after which they are welcomed to the Lord's Table and receive Holy Communion for the first time. This is the climax of their Christian initiation. Just prior to receiving the Eucharist for the first time, children celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Unlike many other sacraments, Holy Communion is not celebrated just once. Each week, Catholics go to Mass to participate in the celebration of the Eucharist, continuing their journey of faith throughout their lives.
